A woman's face is characterized in part by her full cheeks, which taper down toward the chin to form a graceful, heart-shaped facial contour. To achieve this facial shape, the cheeks need upper fullness and the tapered line to the chin must be defined. An attractive male face may have high cheekbones as well, although the overall facial shape is slightly different.

Transform the feminine face

If you decide you want fuller, more feminine cheeks, there are a few facial feminization cheek procedures that may be right for you:

Cheek Implants for Facial Feminization

Prominent, defined cheekbones can be accomplished with silicone cheek implants. The advantages of silicone cheek implants include:

  • Long-term cosmetic result
  • Requires only minimal, well-hidden incisions
  • Can be performed at the same time as eyelid surgery or other facial procedures

Cheek implants can be inserted through an incision inside your mouth along the gum line, or in the lower eyelid crease. Both of these incisions are virtually impossible to detect and do not attract attention.

Buccal Lipectomy

Cheek definition can be achieved by removing excess fat in the cheek – a cosmetic procedure called "buccal lipectomy." Removal of extra cheek fat is sometimes used in facial feminization to create a more feminine facial contour and the appearance of high cheekbones. If fat in your mid-cheek is obscuring the feminine curve of the cheek, then buccal lipectomy may be right for you.

Fat Grafting for Facial Feminization

Fat grafting may be an option for facial feminization of the cheeks. The fat grafting takes unwanted fat from one area of your body and moves it to another area where volume is desired. For example, fat could be removed from the back using liposuction, then purified, and then added to the cheeks to create more defined, feminine cheeks.

Dermal fillers for facial feminization

Injectables such as Botox, Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm offer MTF clients a safe, non-surgical alternative to more invasive cheek-enhancing procedures. These agents work to bolster the skin’s production of collagen and elastic, proteins found in the body that are responsible for the skin’s youthful glow. Dermal fillers can add volume and definition to depleted cheeks, and actually reshape the midface for a more feminine aesthetic.

What can I expect after surgery?

Most cheek feminization patients find their post-op swelling, pain and discoloration is quite manageable.

Our team will create a personalized aftercare plan for you, and provide you with all the necessary medications for your comfort during recovery. You may need to maintain a liquid diet for a few days as the cheeks heal.

Be careful to avoid foods and beverages that are too hot, as your face may be too numb to notice the temperature. It’s best to avoid vigorous exercise for the first few weeks, however you can safely return to normal work activities within about 10 days. Swelling will gradually lessen over the course of about six weeks, revealing your lovely new cheeks and feminine smile.

What Sets Our Team Apart From Our Peers?

Many plastic surgeons with a rudimentary grasp of soft tissue mechanics can claim to specialize in transgender facial surgery. Our team, however, is certified in cosmetic procedures by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. They have also completed multiple rigorous residencies in craniofacial surgery, which centers around the bone structure of the face and its supporting structures.

Our team dispels anxiety by offering patients a clear road map for their surgery and access to various educational resources.

Our team will never pressure patients to go in a direction that doesn’t feel right. Instead, we focus on listening, reflecting on the client’s goals, and striving to meet them elegantly.

What's the next step?

During a consultation with our team, we can recommend all of your options for achieving feminine cheeks. We focus not only on the facial feminization result you want to see, but also tailors any procedure you choose to complement your unique facial features. Facial feminization should allow your outer beauty to reflect your inner gender identity, and it should do so by enhancing your own natural beauty and feminizing certain facial features. Your consultation will likely involve an examination of your cheeks, a review of previous surgeries and discussion of before and after photos you find the most in line with your vision.

Our team can also provide you with 3D imaging results so that you can preview your new facial contours in advance. If you have an interest in other facial or body feminization procedures such as rhinoplasty, foreheadplasty, hair transplantation, facelift, chin reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck or MTF breast augmentation, our team is happy to go over these in depth during your initial meeting as well. Often combining treatments has the benefit of reducing costs, trimming downtime and minimizing post-operative pain.

Financing

Our team understands how important facial feminization surgery can be in achieving the authentic aesthetic image you wish to project to the world. While most insurance carriers do not cover cheek feminization due to its cosmetic nature, there are excellent healthcare credit solutions available to you with reasonable payment plans and interest rates.
