Dr. Tom S. Liu is a board-certified plastic surgeon, with a coveted certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties as capable of certifying plastic surgeons.

Dr. Tom S. Liu has a star-studded education and training background, dotted with charitable and philanthropic endeavors. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors and Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University, following which he attended the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, followed closely with a 5-year combined MD-MBA program at the Booth School of Business. His time at the University of Chicago was perhaps the most influential point in his life because he discovered his passion for plastic surgery when he aided in the reconstructive surgery of children with congenital deformities during a medical mission in Puerto Rico.

Moved by his experience and an ignited passion for plastic surgery, he embarked on philanthropic medical ventures to fundraise $10,000 for a Puerto Rican foundation focused on pediatric reconstructive plastic surgery. He combined his surgical skills and technical proficiency with his acquired business knowledge to ensure the foundation’s success. Eventually, Dr. Liu graduated from the University of Chicago with Honors, being nominated for the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He followed his drive to the prestigious UCLA Medical Center, widely considered the “Best in the West” by US News and World Reports, where he completed an incredibly challenging general surgery-plastic surgery program.

During his time at UCLA, Dr. Liu honed his interest in aesthetic plastic surgery and microvascular surgery. He followed his passion to the Plastic Surgery Institute in San Francisco, where he completed an additional year of subspecialty fellowship training, one of the country’s only fellowship programs to combine aesthetic surgery and advanced microsurgery. At this stage, Dr. Liu worked closely with some of the world’s most reputable and remarkable plastic surgeons, imbibing their cumulative experience and knowledge with facial plastic surgeries, injectables, breast reconstructive surgeries, microsurgeries, body aesthetic plastic surgeries, and more.

Reputation & Current Role

Dr. Liu currently serves as the Co-Medical Director of the Plastic and Breast Reconstruction program at El Camino Hospital, nurturing his love and talent for breast reconstruction surgery. He’s currently researching advanced breast reconstruction techniques, such as total autologous reconstruction with fat grafting and single-stage direct to implant reconstruction. His specialized focus on breast reconstruction has led to him being selected as one of the few plastic surgeons to serve on the advisory panels of a scar treatment company, an advanced tissue allograft company, and a leading breast implant company.

Dr. Liu has also received formal certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, making him a board-certified surgeon. He has been published widely in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Annals of Plastic Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also written chapters on facelifts, breast reconstruction, microsurgery, and the economics of cosmetic surgery. His work and research are frequently quoted by the New York Times and NBC. And often disseminates his insight as a plastic surgery speaker on rhinoplasty, scar management, and breast reconstruction.
